Professional Certifications and Licenses

I have been in the mental health field for twenty-four years. My professional experience includes many years and psychiatric hospital and rehabilitation settings, residential agencies for teenagers, and sixteen years in private practice working with adults and sometimes adolescents. My education is in psychology and sociology. I am interested in people, their psychology, and their cultural and historic origins, backgrounds, beliefs and practices. I am licensed by the state of California as an “LMFT” or licensed marriage and family therapist, which means I practice psychotherapy with a relational focus when I work with individuals and sometimes couples. At the same time, given my training in psychiatric settings, I am very conversant and comfortable with the medical view of mental health, and although I practice mindfulness-based therapy with a client-centered and humanistic philosophy, I have good tools of diagnosis, treatment planning, tracking and accountability, which means that my focus tends to be accurate and goal focused. In this way, I am both open-ended, open-minded, in my approach to therapy sessions while also pragmatic and grounded in what works.

Services Offered

I provide mindfulness-based psychotherapy to adults who need support to manage anxiety, sometimes symptoms of depression, life adjustments and transitions. I consider psychotherapy to be a very honest, private, safe and helpful relationship that exists solely to benefit people who may feel that friends, family, and others in their lives are a little too involved, too close, have many of their own concerns in the way to be able to listen nonjudgmentally and really “here and see” an individual.

I provide weekly, sixty-minute psychotherapy sessions that begin with close consideration of what brings the person to my office, how long their concerns have been around, what they value most in their life, who they are, their values and beliefs, and how they would like to live, feel, work, love and relate. The actual therapeutic work consists of focusing on what a client desires, his or her strengths, and what probably needs to change, and in every session there is attention given to thinking patterns, emotion, subtleties of expression that usually fall below the threshold of awareness but that can be brought out in the safety of the therapeutic setting to reveal more to the client of what she or he is thinking and feeling, imagining. This material becomes the medicine, the process that reveals the trouble and illuminates the path toward successful self-adjustment, change, and improved living.
