I am a licensed psychotherapist and marriage/couples counselor with over 20 years of experience. I approach my work with a strong sense of compassion rooted in the belief that everyone’s pain is valid.  

I work extensively with grief and all of the complex emotions that can come up around any kind of loss or unwanted change.—Grief is a deeply personal and unique experience for every individual. I work to help people feel seen and supported in the grief journey—and never judged, for any competing, seemingly conflicted emotions that might arise.

I specialize in helping people understand and repair childhood wounds, present and past relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, grief, recovering from harsh, demanding self-judgment. A large focus of my practice is encouraging the development of better, more accurate insight, which typically leads to self-compassion and better balance in reactions and relationships. I work to help people form a kinder and more reality-based relationship with themselves in order to move towards a place of acceptance and a much more workable inner peace.  

Therapy can be a deeply personal and rewarding experience, and I believe that it is essential for you to feel comfortable, safe, and understood by your therapist. Toward that end, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation, or I charge for the initial session if we agree that we’re a good fit (in which case you can handle payment for that first session along with the payment for the second session).

I am currently offering in-person sessions in Washington, DC, and in Southern Maryland. I also offer online telehealth sessions via Zoom Pro for Healthcare, with end-to-end encryption enabled and all AI features turned off.

Hi! I’m Shay, a fellow griever, and licensed social worker who serves others through grief in a clinical setting, facilitating psychotherapy. I am here to witness, listen, and support. We are not meant to go through this life alone, especially when we’re in the middle of a grief storm.

Grief changes us—but even in loss, there’s room for hope and meaning.

My approach blends attachment theory, psychodynamic insight, and a strengths-based perspective, using modalities like ACT to support growth and healing. When working with grief, I draw from the dual-process model which recognizes that life and loss are deeply intertwined—and that it’s possible to move between moments of mourning and moments of living. Your experiences shape you, but they don’t define you. Together, we’ll make room for both your grief and your growth.

This work is personal to me. My own experiences with grief and therapy are what led me here, and they give me a lived understanding of what it’s like to rebuild after loss–not from a textbook, but from my own life. I’m not here to lead from a distance. I’m here to be with you through the work, honoring your process while drawing from what I’ve learned in my own journey.
