I am Cathy Carphin, writer, poet, facilitator, mentor, Grief Educator and Healing Trauma presenter of polyvagal practices. I have experienced the ups and downs of life including the trauma of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, being a home caregiver for my husband who had cognitive impairment due to stroke, his death, the isolation of COVID, my decision to retire and a motor vehicle accident.

My joy has been to receive counseling through my grief, to understand how these experiences impacted my internal wellbeing, to integrate these disruptions in my world, find purpose again and share my learnings with you.

I have been named Elder by my communities – a holder of history and wisdom. It is my privilege to support those who did not ask for nor initiate walking a similar path.

It is difficult to go through grief on our own; there are many resources on line and hopefully in your community. And it is often easier to know that many others have gone through and are going through the same experiences as you are. Often it helps to talk one on one with someone who understands and can help make sense of the impact on your life.

I have felt called for some time to tender support for your grief journey that is connected to trauma and loss. I have experienced so much of it throughout my own life and want to offer the benefit of my experiential wisdom, heartfelt understanding and loving support, along with a prediction of hope for your ongoing recovery.  

I have been working as a coach supporting people in addiction recovery along with the trauma grief and loss that is most usually expressed through the addiction, whatever that addiction may be, for about thirty years.

Three years ago I had a run of traumatic events; a house fire with a complete loss of contents and structure, three serious medical emergencies of my own, a devastating relationship betrayal which culminating in the tragic loss of my life partner. These events served to not only prove challenging in ways I never could have prepared for; they also stirred up memories from a childhood that had been filled with trauma from Day 1. This was of no surprise to me. I paid careful attention to the call to a much deeper dive into the encompassing “all-ness” of my grief as it continued to unfold. If I was to rise from the ashes and attach new meaning to my life as I moved forward I knew there was just not going to be any papering over of how I was feeling and thinking.

Grieving and receiving support as these new life events unfolded and then moving into building capacity and resiliency throughout the process has been vital in righting myself and creating new meaning as my essential and outer world identities have been called forth for re-crafting.

Devastating challenges have awakened new opportunities to present themselves in acceptance and self compassion.

I’m looking forward to connecting and supporting you in your time of  exponential growth; as we entertain all the possibilities of what is exactly right for you, at any given time in your journey. 

As the stream flows through all seasons, so we would do well to take on the essence of water. Remaining ever fluid in our responses, always remembering, the rivulet, the stream, the river, the ocean. We are all, ultimately heading home to Source.

Navigating our way through the addiction maze is like wandering alone through a desert with no water.  It consumes us as it sucks the life right out of us—drains us of our time, our energy, our mental health, and quite possibly, our very lives.
